SEND Parent Champion Scheme earns national recognition

Blackburn with Darwen is celebrating a major national achievement as its SEND Parent Champion scheme, supported by Family Hubs, gains recognition at the Coram National Parent Champions Awards 2025.

Two of our Blackburn parent champions have been recognised for their outstanding work supporting families of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Diane Price and Sarah Sumner were awarded at the 2025 Parent Champions Awards, run by Coram Family and Childcare.

Cllr Julie Gunn, Executive Member for Children’s Services said:

“I am delighted to hear the news that two of our volunteers have won Coram Family and Childcare’s Parent Champions Awards. Congratulations to both Diane and Sarah!

“Our Parent Champions do such vital work at our Family Hubs. I am especially proud that our SEND Parent Champions have been recognised nationally for the positive changes that they contribute to the service and for going above and beyond!”

The awards have recognised the great work of Blackburn with Darwen’s Parent Champions, highlighting their impact on local communities.

Maria Nugent, Service lead for Early Years and Out of School settings said:

“I am so proud of our volunteers and staff. This is a huge success for SEND families, dedicated volunteers, the borough, and the future of SEND services, including upcoming inspections.

“The award is a testament to the collective effort and commitment to strengthening this scheme.”

The annual Parent Champions Awards recognise and celebrate the work of Parent Champions volunteers and coordinators.

There are five categories of award, two of which were awarded to Blackburn with Darwen.

Winner of the Volunteer of the Year – Biggest Impact, Diane Price has demonstrated extraordinary dedication to the scheme, helping to reach isolated parents, mentor new volunteers, and advocate locally.

Winner of the Volunteer of the Year – Best Newcomer: Sarah Sumner has made a significant impact since joining, contributing meaningfully and creating positive change through her role.

As well as our volunteer winners, SEND Engagement and Co-production Lead for Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council Catherine Reilly was also nominated as Coordinator of the Year.

Catherine has been recognised for her leadership, creativity, and commitment to uniting communities, supporting volunteers, and fostering personal development within the program.
